beans

I've been trying to cook more with beans.
I haven't been wildly successful.
Tonight, I burned my pot of black beans. Because I forgot about them.
Marian (who is just learning to eat, at age 7, and not usually so cooperative) ate them anyway.

Until she couldn't stand the taste:
"Mom! It's so yuck, that burned taste. It's like a giant with dirty socks on!"

I am awesome.

Maybe I just needed a good laugh and am a little slap happy at the moment, but Marian's description (and that a pot of burning beans could be forgotten) really had me in a giggle fit. Thanks!

Beans are so tricky! With black beans esp. you must only use COLD water to soak them in overnight. Hot water doesn't work as well (perhaps because of salted/soft water issues). And don't salt your water. For some reason your beans won't cook all the way through (I'm in a very advice giving mood tonight).

Marian is so adorable. I'm so impressed that she would eat the beans! She is so much more adventurous in eating these days.

I don't like cooking beans either. I made a white bean chili that no one really liked, the beans were pretty mushy. Oh, well. I am impressed that Marian ate them, there would have been 'I am not trying that' over here. HAHA What a good sport. I am glad she is able to eat, Yeah!

I used canned beans for quick meals. But for the rest I use the crock pot. I can never get my beans to really cook otherwise. Pressure cooker's are a great way to go. Sara I think uses one...

Well, it turns out that I have a bean story now too. Unfortunately. I made the most wonderful lentil and smoked turkey soup last night, for today, and left it on the stove last night. I'm not adventurous enough to eat food left out overnight, and so alas, it was wasted. Whaaa...

yeah, nothing sucks like burned beans. I always soak overnight in cool water. I also always use way more water than needed to start with....just in case I forget them :-)
